Pets for Seniors

Pets for Seniors Program

We believe companion animals play a vital role in our lives—especially as we age. Our Pets for Seniors Program makes it easier for adopters aged 60 and older to bring home a loving pet by offering a $50.00 discount on your adoption fee.

Ready to Find Your Perfect Companion? Explore our adoptable pets and discover the joy a senior pet can bring to your life. Let us help you find a furry friend through our Pets for Seniors Program.

We’re proud to be the only shelter in the area offering this unique program to our senior community members!

Pets Matter

As we grow older, companionship becomes even more essential. Pets provide unconditional love, reduce loneliness, and bring joy to daily life, particularly for those experiencing reduced mobility or social interaction. Research shows that pet ownership for seniors can:

  • Boost Physical Health: Pets encourage light activity, like walking or playing, which supports overall wellness.
  • Reduce Stress: The calming presence of a pet can lower stress and promote relaxation.
  • Enhance Social Connection: Pets spark conversations and connections, helping seniors stay engaged.
  • Improve Longevity: Studies link pet ownership to better health outcomes and longer lives for those 60 and up.

A pet is more than a companion—they’re a source of purpose, love, and laughter.

How It Works

To participate in the Pets for Seniors Program:

  • Prepare for Adoption: Explore the Pre-adoption Checklist to ensure you’re ready to welcome a pet into your home.

  • Complete an Application: Review our adoption process and submit an adoption application. Remember to check the “Pets for Seniors” box in the ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS section. An approved application is required, just like any adoption, to ensure a perfect match.

  • Choose Your New Companion: Browse our adoptable dogs and adoptable cats online, then visit the shelter to meet them! Collaborate with our Adoption Counselor to select a pet that perfectly suits your lifestyle and preferences.
  • Mention the Program: Inform our Adoption Counselor during your visit to ensure you receive the free or reduced fee.

Consider an Older Pet

We encourage seniors to adopt pets aged 5 and up, who are often available at no cost through this program.

  • These middle-aged cats and dogs—full of personality and still in their prime—are sometimes overlooked by shelter visitors.
  • Just like seniors, these pets are far from “over the hill” and ready to share their best years with you!

Adopting a senior pet enriches your life and gives a deserving animal a forever home.
