Paws & Reflect

Adopting a pet is a rewarding decision that comes with significant responsibility.
Before bringing a new furry friend into your home, reflect on whether you’re ready for the commitment. Use this checklist to help you make an informed decision and ensure a happy, lasting bond with your future companion.

Evaluate Your Lifestyle

Bringing a pet into your life is a long-term commitment, often lasting 10–20 years. Consider how a pet fits into your daily routine:

Lifestyle Fit: Does your work schedule involve long hours away from home? Some animals, like certain dog breeds, may struggle with loneliness, while others, like cats, might adapt more easily.

Travel Plans: Do you travel frequently? If so, who will care for your pet when you’re away? Do you have reliable pet sitters, boarding options, or family members who can help?

Your Home: Do you have enough space, such as a yard, for a pet to thrive? Is your home pet-friendly (e.g., fenced yard for dogs)? If you have limited space, are you committed to going for regular walks?

If You Rent: Have you confirmed with your landlord that pets are allowed? Is there a required pet deposit, and is all or some refundable? Are there restrictions on the type, size, or number of pets?

Financial Commitment: Pets can be expensive. Are you prepared for costs like routine veterinary care, vaccinations, emergency medical expenses, training, grooming, and a nutritious diet?

Timing: Is now the right time for you and your family to welcome a pet? Will you remain committed despite facing major life changes, like moving, starting a new job, or expanding your family?

Selecting Your Companion

Choosing the right pet is about matching your lifestyle and preferences. Keep an open mind and focus on compatibility:

Stay Open-minded: Avoid preconceived notions about breeds or appearances. The perfect pet might surprise you!

Observe & Engage: Spend time with the animals at the shelter. Watch their behavior and interactions. Use both your head and heart to make a thoughtful choice.

Talk to Our Staff: Our team knows each animal’s personality and history. Ask questions like:

    • How would you describe this animal’s personality and behavior?
    • Are they good with children, other pets, or cats specifically?
    • Do they have any special needs or medical conditions?
    • What is their energy level, and how much exercise do they need?

Prepare Questions: Bring a list of questions tailored to your needs. This will help you find a pet that aligns with your lifestyle and expectations.

Preparing Your Home

Before bringing your pet home, ensure your space is safe and welcoming:

Pet-proof Your Home: Remove hazards like toxic plants, exposed wires, or small objects a pet could swallow. Secure trash cans and ensure cleaning supplies are out of reach.

Create a Safe Space: Set up a comfortable area for your pet with a bed, water, and toys. A crate for a dog or a carrier for a cat is recommended. This helps them feel secure as they adjust.

Gather Supplies: Stock up on essentials. You’ll need food (wet or dry, your choice), two bowls (one for water, one for food), a collar and leash (for dogs), a litter box with litter (for cats), and toys to keep your pet engaged.

Plan for Routine: Think about how you’ll integrate feeding, exercise, and playtime into your daily schedule. Consistency is key for a pet’s well-being.

Not Ready to Adopt?

Adopting a pet is a big decision, and it’s okay if the timing isn’t right. You can still make a difference in the lives of our shelter animals! Consider these alternatives:

Provide a temporary home for an animal in need. Fostering helps animals transition to permanent homes and frees up space in the shelter.

Help with tasks like walking dogs, socializing cats, or assisting with daily care at the shelter. Your time can make a huge impact.

Attend one of our events, like the Fur Ball or Round Up, to support the shelter. Your participation helps fund care and adoptions!
